Surprisingly, Supercell had two games on the top 10 list, with Clash Royale coming in at 10th place. The second most popular game by consumer spending was Monster Strike. By Tokyo-headquartered Mixi and the third Candy Crush by California-headquartered Activision Blizzard.
The three most popular apps by consumer spending were Netflix, Tinder and Pandora Music. While the three most downloaded apps were Facebook, Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp Messenger, according to App Annie.
What is Clash of Clans?
Clash of clans is a free strategy game developed by Supercell. It was released in 2012 for IOS and in 2013 for android. It is well-known for its addictive gameplay, where players have to build and defend their villages. They can upgrade their village through the in-game currency. The currency mostly consists of gold, elixir and gems.
While it is possible to grind through hours of gameplay to earn aforementioned currency, it is possible to speed up your process. This can be done through buying in-game currency with real money, which will drastically reduce the time taken to build your town hall, train your soldiers, etc.
The free game is also the fifth most popular game of the decade ranked by downloads.
