PUBG not as popular as it used to be ?

PUBG losing players

PUBG mobile is easily one of the best mobile games. With it constant content updates, Tencent is trying to keep PUBG mobile alive at the top spot for as long as possible. On the contrary, PUBG on PC has lost almost 82% of its players compared to its peak back in January of 2018. According to data from Steam charts, the average monthly players in the last thirty days was 291,573. As compared to in January of 2018 it had 1,584,886 average monthly players .

PUBG on PC has lost almost 82% of its players. PUBG not as popular as it used to be.

While PUBG popularised battle Royale as gaming genre the subsequent launch of games like Fortnite and EA’s Apex Legends overtook PUBG. Updation of content happens regularly in these games. Fortnite for example, offers cross-platform gameplay where new content and features are regularly added. Similarly Apex Legends has become EA’s flagship title. Its popularity has led EA to consider bringing it to mobile platforms by 2021. Recently Call of Duty launched a mobile version of the infamous game rivaling PUBG mobile.  While PUBG gained some of its lost players with the introduction of the Vikendi map in December of 2018 to January 2019. However this rise in players was only temporary.

The developers need to put on their thinking caps!

PUBG‘s military themed survival theme has done great for the game, however it seems like the players are getting bored of it. The developers need to put on their thinking caps. They have to find a way, to stop bleeding players in this manner. They need to figure out something for the game that is new and fresh. Fortnite’s big shakeup after Season 10 for example, where they developed a completely new map that had new features, only boosted the game’s popularity.

PUBG dying

Despite the numbers being down, efforts have been made to attract new crowds. Recently the 5.1 update with season 5 was released this month. This new update saw numerous changes to the Miramar map and addition of more features. Borrowing from games like Fortnite, PUBG has introduced vending machines that give out painkillers and energy drinks. There is also a new survivor pass called ‘ Survivor Pass : Badlands’. They also introduced a new Community Mission system and a feature that allows players to throw melee weapons & supplies.

These updates show that PUBG developers are trying hard to bring crowd back to this game. However what they’re doing doesn’t seem to be enough, as players continues to quit the game. At this point only a radical change of gameplay can only stop this increased loss of players.
