Seven years since its release, Candy Crush continues to remain the most popular android phone game. Candy Crush is a free-to-play match-three puzzle video game released by King on April 12, 2012, for Facebook; other versions for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Windows 10 followed. It is a variation of their browser game Candy Crush.
As of the first week of September 2019, Candy Crush has close to 2.1 million stateside players on Android devices, as well as another 1.75 million on iOS according to data provided by analytics platform App Ape. This is the only mobile gaming application that made it to the Forbes India– TRA Research list of the Most Respected Consumer Tech Brands. As per data collected by Sensor Tower, Candy Crush Saga was downloaded 9 million times worldwide in October of 2019. In the same month it also generated revenue of 36$ million. This revenue was primarily through in-app purchases.
Neuropsychiatrist Dr Rohann Bokdawala believes “This happens because the brain produces dopamine, a chemical responsible for pleasure,” he says.
“The initial levels of the game are easy enough to hook the player. Clearing one level increases the dopamine level, which is similar to getting a reward. And the brain is a sucker for rewards.” He believes that this game has such a large player base because it proved instant gratification to the brain. Additionally the newer generations are said to largely depend on the concept of instant gratification thereby making this game a perfect fit for the youth in this country. The simplicity of this game attracts not only youngsters and children but also adults.
However there is a fine line between playing the game for enjoyment as compared to it being an addiction. Playing these games give people the same addictive high as doing drugs or consuming alcohol gives. When it comes to games like candy crush , people enjoy these games. Its because it is interesting, competitive, entertaining. It’s a good time pass, there is attention to detail in the game and so on.
