What to expect?
4A Games shows courage and redefines the phrase “inspired by …”. You turn completely away from the events of the novel and put the characters in a completely new plot and different relationships with each other. So you take the big twist, which is only halfway revealed in the book Metro 2035 , and place it at the beginning of the story as the starting point for Artyom’s adventure.
While Artyom continues underground in the book, he does not see the Moscow subway again in Metro Exodus Game PC . On the train you go on a journey across war-torn Russia to find a place to stay. The relationships between the characters are also different than in the novel. Where Artyom was considered a cranky loner among the soldiers and his father-in-law wanted to get rid of him, he is now their best brother in arms.
A radical cut that pays off. The story only really unfolds when it breaks with the expected and thus enables an emotional depth that one is not used to from shooters. Especially on the journey in the Aurora there are always moments in which you can linger. When you sit together with your comrades over mushroom schnapps and the sound of a guitar and at least for a moment you forget what horrors await you at the next stop.
Storyline
*Spoilers Ahead*
After the attack on bunker D6, Artyom is embittered and disappointed by the constant conflict and corruption of the Metro and leaves the Order of the Spartans. He soon becomes obsessed with proving that there are survivors outside of Moscow and, despite Anna’s concern and Miller’s disapproval, takes part in numerous surface expeditions. During one of these he and Anna see a freight train traveling to the surface.
Before they can reach it, they are captured by Hansa soldiers, along with a couple of people who claim to come from outside Moscow. The soldiers kill the two and capture Anna, not before having shot Artyom who is left to die. Having survived the execution, Artyom follows the soldiers to their base to save Anna and, during a fight, inadvertently destroys the radio jammer that was blocking all communications in and out of the Moscow area.
Radio broadcasts from all over the world are being received again and Artyom and Anna realize that humanity is not extinct. After that they manage to escape by stealing one of the Hansa trains with the help of an elderly deserter driver named Yermak.
As the train departs, the Order of Spartans (consisting of Miller, Idiot, Duke, Damir, Alyosha, Stephan, Tokarev, and Sam) bursts in to win it back and the team is shocked to discover Artyom and Anna are there.
After managing to destroy a cruising train that was trying to arrest them and knowing that the Hansa will kill them for discovering the truth, Miller decides to escape from Moscow; arriving out of the city he reveals to others that, although many Russian cities have been bombed, the war is not over, and that NATO has invaded what remains of the nation. He also confesses that to prevent more bombs from being dropped on Moscow, Russian leaders they secretly decided to disrupt all communications to make the rest of the world believe that no one had survived.
After this explanation, they receive a radio communication from the Moscow Defense Center, where all survivors are urged to gather at the Ark, a military bunker located in Mount Jamantau, complete with all the resources a survivor could wish for; Miller then decides to head there, convinced that the Ark is where the Russian government has rebuilt and reorganized itself.

Gameplay
Shooter fans will find their way around straight away, because at first glance the controls are the same as all other shooters of this generation. However, after a few minutes you will find that Metro Exodus Game PC offers a lot more. Artyom can not only fire, switch and reload his weapons, no, you also have to make sure that your weapons do not get dirty or dirty, otherwise the accuracy suffers and you could have problems in the fight against the numerous creatures and bandits due to jamming.
Your weapons don’t just get dirty through actual use, water, mud and other adverse conditions in the game world of Metro Exodus Game PC also damage your weapons. However, not only can your weapons be damaged, you also have to pay special attention to your mask.
This can also be damaged. They can be repaired, but valuable and limited resources are required to repair them. Packed with a large backpack, you always have extensive equipment with you. Geiger counter, charger, flashlight, lighter, binoculars, compass, night vision device, knife and much more can be found in your inventory.
On the way you are able to make medipacks or other small gadgets. Ammunition for the numerous weapons can also be produced from collected resources. However, ammunition can only be made if there is a workbench near you. Some of these can be found in the respective areas of the game world or in your “Aurora” locomotive.
Gameworld
The world around the story is as engaging as it is detailed. The long journey of Metro Exodus Game PC takes us to different parts of Russia and lets us discover snow-buried cities, dry deserts and quiet mountain villages . Every new place is like its own world, with its own dynamics and stories . Among other things, Artyom gets involved in the war between pirates and hunters of the taiga and gets on the nerves of the slave traders in Kazakhstan.
As a result, the story takes on something episode-like and Artyom has to rethink his personal priorities and dreams again and again. But the Spartan group does not allow itself to be discouraged by failure. They pause briefly to collect themselves, see what options they still have and forge a new plan. The structure of the story is similar to that in Metro 2035 and thus maintains the reference to Glukhovsky’s vision.
Of course, you can also expect side quests and event locations in the different regions. They recognized the opportunity and created a half-open game world in which there are countless interesting ruins to explore. And they all have that beautiful charm that abandoned cities bring with them. There is also a useful device from time to time, like a night vision visor, and extensions for the weapons or lots of loot to be found.
If that’s not enough for you to browse the vastness, you can also look for the legacies of the former residents. You can find letters, postcards, diaries and tapes everywhere and get an additional view of the dead world.
Ammo management is must
The game gives us a choice of how to go about things. So if you get the chance to run, run. Save on ammunition, because it is scarce anyway – no matter how busy you are collecting scrap and chemicals. In addition to bullets, you have to use them to build weapon mods and repair all of your equipment.
This is a bit confusing at the beginning in the backpack menu, but ultimately not rocket science. If you take a few minutes to get to know it, everything will soon work by itself.
You have to be able to handle it too. In addition to the human opponents, the Russian lands also lead mutants against you. They range from dog-like beasts to flying demons to ghouls that can camouflage themselves. You also have to prepare yourself for a few bosses who have no choice but to shoot everything you have at them. The only thing left for you to do here is face it and fight for survival.
The backpack is indispensable because you can use it to build ammunition for special weapons and medpacks in the field. I had to screw syringes together several times in the midst of mutants so that I could somehow make it to the exit.
Only the mobile pedestals are even more difficult to handle. They steer themselves as stubbornly and clumsily as old, rusty wrecks whose axle breaks at the next pothole. Oh wait ─ that’s exactly what they are. Even if the driving becomes really nerve-wracking at times, I can appreciate that within the realism.
What about Graphics and Sound?
Metro Exodus Game PC is not only convincing in terms of play, the Metro Exodus Game PC Game PC version can also score points visually across the board. Crisp and very high-contrast display on the Metro Exodus Game PC Game PC, great light effects thanks to HDR support, reflections worth seeing in the water or in puddles, gloomy snow-covered surface areas, dark underground sections or Mad Max-like action in the desert with explosions, Metro Exodus Game PC just looks damn good and gets away with it almost completely without any technical flaws.
Here and there a small drop in the frame rate for a few seconds or a few pixelated textures are all we could complain about, if you are looking for the fly in the ointment.
In terms of sound, it behaves similarly to graphics. We enjoyed the game in Dolby Atmos and Metro Exodus Game PC is another example of the need for significantly more titles with Dolby Atmos support. The sound effects are well mixed. For example, if you sneak through a dark underground section, you can hear rattling from all corners, voices of distant opponents are heard, the howling of a creature, the whistling wind, sound-wise there is always something going on around you and you sometimes don’t know in which direction to look first.
However, we also find a small point of criticism here, namely the synchronization. In our opinion, this has only partially succeeded. While the synchronization is absolutely appropriate and consistent with some characters, with others you think that it doesn’t fit at all.
In addition, it happened again and again that during a briefing another character suddenly starts telling a story and several people are talking at the same time, which unfortunately means that you don’t always understand what Commander Miller wants from you. Only the subtitle helps. In addition, it takes getting used to again that our character Artyom does not speak and therefore does not give any answers.
Bottomline
Glukhovsky has inspired 4A Games to do great things. The novel fans will find a completely new aspect of the Metro universe here. The story is the game’s flagship and can line up alongside other great narratives in video game history. Whether trigger-happy, sneak or sprinter ─ everyone can solve problems as they wish and still get to the next train station with a lot of fun. Between highs and lows, we experience moments of carefree relaxation and see part of a believable life story in a post-apocalyptic world. It is exactly what makes the hearts of book and game fans alike beat faster.
It is well known that too much anticipation can lead to disappointment with the final product in the end. Fortunately, this was not the case with the shooter Metro Exodus Game PC from developer 4A Games. The whole package is just right, Metro Exodus Game PC definitely represents a worthy end to the trilogy. The story and the characters are really well done and with at least 20 hours of pure playtime you won’t get bored that quickly. Also the step of the developers, that in Metro Exodus Game PC, they distance themselves from the completely linear levels and offer large freely accessible areas, which are mainly located on the surface, was a courageous but ultimately absolutely right step for us.
With the exception of minimal frame rate drops and a not completely convincing synchronization, pretty much everything about Metro Exodus Game PC is correct. The incredibly dense atmosphere, the background music and the sound effects, the crafting system, the bombast optics on the Metro Exodus Game PC Game PC thanks to HDR support and 4K resolution should make every shooter fan sit up and take notice, because the title is definitely not just for Metro series trailer a must.
