Chinese Man loses $1.4 Million in online MMORPG

You read that right.

In the latest bizarre news from the gaming world. An absolute madlad from China, apparently paid over one million dollars for a video game character, only to have his friend sell the character off for barely over 500 dollars.

How did such an astonishing series of events transpire? According to the documentation of the court case that followed, Lu Mou, the millionaire in question, spent such a ridiculous amount to acquire upgrades for his in-game character. He then lent the video game character to his friend, Li, to further improve the character through actually playing the game.

Here’s where things get interesting though. As apparently Lu Mou barely ever played the game and Li was the one who used the character most often. The two had apparently entered into a financial agreement where Li agreed to put in the necessary in-game time to level up the character for some monetary compensation. After the necessary leveling-up was done, Li apparently decided to sell the character for $55,138 on Treasure house, the in-game online market where players can be traded.

He accidentally priced the character at just $552. And before any of the parties realized what had just transpired, another unrelated gamer recognized the opportunity at hand and purchased the character.

Lu Mou was understandably upset, and decided to sue NetEase, the makers of the game and his former friend Li. The whole court proceeding was settled by giving back the video game avatar in question to Mou, and asking him to pay $12,789 in damages. The gamer who purchased the character was also reimbursed, and this whole saga came to a decisive end.

The lesson learnt? Be very careful with your money.

Especially if you want to spend over a million dollars on a video game character!
