What is European Super League?
The football world has been plunged into crisis after a no. of clubs confirmed that they will join a new league called European Super League.
Now, what is this league and why is the entire world is talking about this.
According to the European super league website the super league is a new European competition between 20 top clubs comprised 15 founders and 5 annual qualifiers as if now 12 clubs including like Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid have all confirmed that they will be the part of the of this breakaway competition these are going to be the founding clubs what we meant by saying founding clubs this means that they will always be a the part of the league they will always play and they don’t have to worry about qualifying unlike others European leagues, UEFA champion’s league and UEFA European league.
How did UEFA and other organization react?
UEFA and other Football association together has condemned the formation of this league
and stated that Football is Based on open competition and sporting merit
FIFA has threatened all the founding clubs and said they can be banned from all kinds of Football.
Football fans across the world are criticizing the League and demanding strict action.
Part of the UEFA statement –
“Super League is only about money, money of the dozen, I don’t want to call them dirty dozen – but UEFA is about developing football, and about financing what should be financed, that our football, our culture, survives – and some people don’t understand it.
Evidence of this is 1000s of Arsenal fans gathered outside the Emirates Stadium before Friday’s game and protested against the Club owners holding banners with various slogans like “created by the poor stolen by the rich” and “Love the club support the team hate the owner” etc.
A similar kind of protest has witnessed by Chelsea fans on Tuesday
Even the Business tycoons like the CEO and founder of Spotify are not out of it.
Danial Ek tweeted against the league and Arsenal as it is one of the founding members.
He tweeted “As a kid growing up, I’ve cheered for Arsenal as long as I can remember. If KSE would like to sell Arsenal I’d be happy to throw my Hat in the ring.
After watching all this
Boris Johnson the British Prime Minister tweeted “Plans for a European Super League would be very Damaging for Football and we support football authorities in taking action
They would strike at the heart of the domestic game and will concern fans across the county. The clubs involved must answer to their fans and the wider footballing community before taking any further steps
How Founding Clubs respond?
Arsenal apologized in an open letter to their fans and decided to withdraw from the Super League and stated that they had “made a mistake”, adding they were withdrawing after listening to them and the “wider football community” and said
“The last few days have shown us yet again the depth of feeling our supporters around the world have for this great club and the game we love.
We needed no reminding of this but the response from supporters in recent days has given us time for further reflection and deep thought.
It was never our intention to cause such distress, however when the invitation to join the Super League came, while knowing there were no guarantees, we did not want to be left behind to ensure we protected Arsenal and its future.”
As a result of listening to you and the wider football community over recent days we are withdrawing from the proposed Super League. We made a mistake, and we apologise for it.
We know it will take time to restore your faith in what we are trying to achieve here at Arsenal but let us be clear that the decision to be part of the Super League was driven by our desire to protect Arsenal, the club you love, and to support the game you love through greater solidarity and financial stability. Stability is essential for the game to prosper and we will continue to strive to bring the security the game needs to move forward.
The system needs to be fixed. We must work together to find solutions which protect the future of the game and harness the extraordinary power football has to get us on the edge of our seats.
Finally, we know this has been hugely unsettling at the end of what has been an incredibly difficult year for us all.
Our aim is always to make the right decisions for this great football club, to protect it for the future and to take us forward. We didn’t make the right decision here, which we fully accept.
We have heard you.”
The Arsenal Board.
Manchester United –
‘Manchester United will not be participating in the European Super League. We have listened carefully to the reaction from our fans, the UK government and other key stakeholders.
We remain committed to working with others across the football community to come up with sustainable solutions to the long-term challenges facing the game.’
Manchester City –
“Manchester City Football Club can confirm that it has formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group developing plans for a European Super League.
Is the idea Prudent or Disastrous?
These clubs are some of the biggest clubs in the world with the huge turnovers
and with the introduction of the league, there is a fear that the rich will become richer and weak will become weaker and ultimately disappear.
This was a league about which people are talking for years but after the announcement of this league, this reality has hit all the football fans very hard.
Why European Super League Essential?
This super league was to be funded by JP Morgan an American Bank with a humungous amount of 5 billion pounds from which all these clubs will receive 3.5 Billion as a 1-time payment.
What European Super League said is They have launched this league to support their Financial Infrastructure and to offset the impact of the COVID pandemic. The concept of a Super League was brought into being by the presidents some really big clubs like Barcelona Arsenal Real Madrid etc. They wanted a more financially viable project for their clubs in times where their turnovers have been severely hit due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other issues. They said that the revenue coming from the Champions League is no longer ‘sufficient’ for these clubs, especially considering the big debts they are in at the moment.
Conclusion –
Football is about bringing the people, communities, countries closer then why to start such a tournament with biased rules just to earn some more millions. Analysing current scenario, it is very evident that it will harm the future of Football more despite of developing the Game.
What do you think to establish European Super League?
