Wasteland 3 game is a title that, from the beginning, shows a clear idea: not to overturn the classic CRPG system (Obsidian style, let’s say) and offer an experience dedicated to fans of the genre and the series in a new, fresh (if not icy) setting.
Wasteland 3 game starts with one of the few novelties, that is by choosing not a character but a couple whose characteristics dictate the mix of skills with which you will start. There is a couple of particularly performing soldiers in combat, a couple of nerds with technology-related skills, one of survivalists and others that we let you discover. There’s also the ability to create the character pair from scratch, fully customizing both the look and the assortment of features.
In order to stir up the interest of the players, several improvements are suggested. For the first time there will be an optional multiplayer part in the form of a co-op mode for the story campaign. Here you can either go stalking together or explore the world separately – synchronously and asynchronously. Generally, you start the game as the only survivor of Team November and end up in the icy deserts of Colorado. There are many secrets, hidden technology, and deadly factions here. The starting point is again the own ranger base, which can be built up and expanded even more – with material extraction, research, communication, supply lines and trade routes.
Get ready for even big sacrifices if you absolutely want to reach the set goal, a project that we too had figured out at the beginning but which has gradually diminished both for the complexity of the game and because the famous roads that lead to Rome here are so many , and imply the possibility of making agreements with other factions to reach the same end or do the classic double game until the last useful moment and decide only when cornered in which direction to really move.
Since their home base was destroyed in the fight against an AI, the once proud rangers are only a shadow of themselves. They keep their heads above water with occasional assignments, but their former glory has faded. So an offer from the Patriarch, the owner of Colorado, came in handy. The rangers were to serve an unspecified mission on his behalf. In return, he will take over the food and resource supply of the unit in the future, more precise parameters should be negotiated at an initial meeting.
Easier said than done, because an insidious ambush kills all ranger members. Only two lucky guys manage to survive and face the patriarch. Dismayed, he made two things clear: It was not he, but a local gang who was behind the attack and our job will be to find his children and arrest them. An undertaking that is tough, because the Patriarch’s offspring are not just a screwdriver.
The combat system is the most complex and difficult dynamic to master in Wasteland 3 game . It is somewhat faithful to that of the previous chapters, although it has opted for a now more orderly approach, with a timeline that is now not shared between allies and enemies but is presented in two well-separated rounds between the two teams.
This does not simplify it, on the contrary, since it removes the complete visibility at least at first of the members of the opposing team, which, it will happen, will come in spurts and will always inflict quite punitive damage on our units with each blow struck.
Wasteland 3 game is madness in its purest form. Not only in terms of its quality and the many hours of fun that the title gave me. No, madness is the foundation on which this fine old school RPG is built. This fact is already evident in the character editor, which has been expanded with some bizarre elements compared to its predecessor. Not only are there a variety of nice options. with which our characters can be designed visually according to your own ideas, but also creative skills such as “sneaky shit”.
What is new in Wasteland 3 game is that you no longer design four characters from the start, but two. Depending on our mood, we can choose from various ready-made pairs, with our own background and default settings, or we can get on with it and build our own warriors. I chose option B and started a gaunt sniper in a skull mask named Wraith. He was accompanied by a medic with a penchant for heavy artillery. The medic with the armor-piercing arguments was given the name Hawk. No sooner had I stamped my dynamic duo out of the ground than it went into the vastness of the Wasteland.
Skills and statistics combine well and in a few hours you will have a team made up of clearly specialized elements, and you will grow fond of them. This is also because the specialization will also have to be studied for fights. So snipers, automatic weapons experts, other elements focused on short range weapons, heavy weapons, melee weapons, medics and so on.
The inventory and the progression screens are made in a very simple and functional way, without frills but you always know how to perform a certain action. We particularly liked the fact that the inventory, for non-personal items, is shared. This means that ammunition, medkits, grenades and the like are drawn, when used, from the common pool, without having to distribute them to each character.
We liked the perk system less. The passive bonuses are certainly useful but the special abilities have left us cold for their lack of ability to give a decisive or even tangible advantage compared to a burst of machine gun shots or a well-aimed shot from a sniper.
Wasteland 3 game achieves an interesting balancing act, because it skilfully balances between funky humor and dark seriousness. The dark nature on which the game is based does not only come from the darker ambience of Colorado – if we were struggling with the merciless conditions of the desert in the predecessor, we find ourselves here in a bleak snowy landscape – but also from the themes of Wasteland 3 game in his Stories presented.
How do you deal with refugees? Does artificial intelligence have a right to life? Is a totalitarian ruler the only chance for stability in society, even if his reign means suffering for the innocent? Questions like these, coupled with very tough decisions, paint a world beyond black and white. Good does not exist in its pure form any more than does evil. The first impact with Wasteland is just under the graphic profile: enormous progress has been made compared to the previous one, despite some small imperfections here and there due to the Unity engine, for example fluctuating textures, models not always up to par and sometimes the same animations do not convince.
In spite of everything, we are still talking about an isometric RPG, so it’s the composition as a whole that counts and Wasteland 3 game in this sense is a small moving picture; decadent and post apocalyptic but still a painting, with particle effects that make everything even more beautiful and small solutions like the breath of the wind able to give life to everything. In some cases, during the dialogues, the camera moves to offer us a close-up in Fallout style, something that has never been seen before in the series and we welcome with pleasure.
Last but not least the audio sector: beyond the themes that are the background to each battle, all of them very enjoyable, the absolute novelty is the introduction of real songs in the most salient moments of the campaign. A sort of country and stoner rock, which mixes melancholy and grandeur very well, giving further strength to some scenes.
Wasteland 3 game is a natural evolution of its predecessor in every respect, starting with the graphics. If in the general structure, especially as regards the development of the character and the combat, there were no real revolutions, however, we worked to refine it, depriving it of the smudges that weighed down the previous chapter.
The new Colorado setting offers an in-depth exploration and not without dangers from the first moment, leaving aside only some areas that are still accessible within a few hours, and introduces the Kodiak not only as a vehicle to face the bad weather but in some cases as a real teammate to be exploited in clashes. To counteract the more technical aspects there is a very solid narrative component, which demonstrates how the original soul of Fargo’s work was not influenced by the acquisition of the studio, indeed making very good use of Microsoft’s money.
The only sin is the absence of the Italian localization, which could create difficulties for those who do not chew English well given the amount of content. Raw, dirty and incredibly addictive, Wasteland 3 game suffers from minor flaws that overall don’t undermine too much of an unmissable experience for fans of the series and CRPGs in general – huge and modern without abandoning its roots.
