Tekken 7 has managed to sell over 5 million copies by the end of the last decade, according to producer Katsuhiro Harada. The official report was made public after two and half years after its debut on PC’s and gaming consoles.
The games primary rival Street Fighter V managed to sell approximately 4.1 million units since its launch in early 2016 as announced by Capcom. This makes Tekken 7 the leading game from any Japanese developer in the decade gone by.
Reddit user Starfirefeet who generally compiles data about viewership managed to track data once again to help us gain more insights. Below are the charts for both Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 for the annual EVO Championship Series Tournament.
At a first glance, one can notice the rising upward trend from 2017 for Tekken 7 after some low viewership in the starting days. Surprisingly, Tekken 7 outperforms Street Fighter V in 2019 which shows the changing preferences of fans.
Tekken 7 performance in 2019 also outperforms Street Fighter V peak viewership in 2018. When popular streamer Ninja appeared as a guest host for the finals. One thing to notice here is that 2018 was indeed the best year for the game in terms of viewership. The decline in numbers in 2019 somewhat reflects the high level of substitution between the two games.
While one can say that Street Fighter V has performed consistently over the years and that Tekken 7 has seen a sudden increase. One cannot underestimate the efforts of the creators to make the game more engaging.
5 million copies of Tekken 7 sold! Tekken 7 and Street Fighter 5 both return to EVO championships this year. Hoping to improve on their numbers from last year.
