Looking at the games in the Classic Street Fighter Series

Street Fighter

Street Fighter developed and published by Capcom is a series of video games first released in 1978. It is something of an all time classic. I am quite sure if you were to go to your parents they will have fond memories of playing this game in an arcade on a Sunday afternoon. The video game series includes a lot of titles to its names. In this blog today we’re going to be talking about all the games in the series and how they influenced an era of ‘fighting games’

Street Fighter 1

1.Street Fighter

This was the start to all of it published in 1087 as an arcade game by capcom. Although it did not create a hype but it did set some preludes for the further titles to follow.

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior

2. Street Fighter II

Released in 1991, this came as a successor to Street Fighter and it made many changes in the gameplay. It involved special moves, many more playable characters and the combo system. The game was extremely successful and became the best selling title since the golden age of arcade gaming. It was followed by many updated versions of Street Fighter II by the names of Street Fighter II Champion Edition, The New Challengers etc.

Street Fighter Alpha

3. Street Fighter Alpha

Between the II and the III part of the series a special Alpha edition was launched by Capcom in 1995. The Alpha edition’s story was based between the time period of Street Fighter I and II so the characters featured were much younger. The game had a lot of upgrades especially in the combo moves and the special techniques area for the players. Further many versions of the Alpha series were launched too including Street Fighter Alpha II in 1996, III in 1998 and a Street Fighter Alpha anthology in 2006.

Street Fighter III 2nd Impact

4.Street Fighter III: New Generation

The part III of the series was a direct sequel to Street Fighter II. But it only retained II original characters from the series which were Ryu and Ken which is why the name ‘New Generation’. Two more parts were released in the Street Fighter III series by the names of Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact – Giant Attack in 1997 and 3rd Strike – Fight for the Future in 1999. 

Street Fighter IV

5. Street Fighter IV

The 4th part in the series was released in 2008 a whopping 11 years after the previous 3rd part in the original series. The arcade versions were released in Japan and the USA around the times of July, August. While the console versions of the game for PS3 and XBox 360 were released in February 2009. The game was also released on Microsoft Windows, iOS and Android over the years to come.

6. Super Street Fighter IV

Although this should be a part of the Street Fighter IV paragraph but this edition truly deserves a different one. The game was super successful. It was liked equally by the players and the critics. The game was amazing and had a pretty interesting story line. All the versions of Street Fighter IV including the Super Street Fighter IV series sold 9 million units across all platforms!

Street Fighter V: Champion Edition

7. Street Fighter V

The edition was developed by Capcom and Dimps and published by Capcom on PS4 and Microsoft Windows exclusively. The game initially has 16 characters at launch out of which 4 of them are new. It was released in 2016. As of 2019 it was the third highest selling Street Fighter Game. It was followed by Street Fighter V : Arcade Edition in 2018 which was much more well received because of the gameplay improvements and Street Fighter V : Champion Edition which was released on February 14th 2020.    

All in all this is the game that has set precedent for all future fighting as well as arcade games.This is the game of the arcades, even if you are lucky enough to find an arcade you’ll be sure to find this game there!
