Paladins is an online character based multiplayer First-person shooter developed by Evil mojo games in part with HI-REZ. So here is our review about the Paladins and everything you should know about it in 2020.
As mentioned about paladins is a hero shooter. If not same, it is pretty much similar to other hero based shooters like Overwatch. But hold on, this game isn’t a cultural sensation in the genre like how Overwatch is, but it is pretty similar to it and I may be biased here, but it is similar to a clone of Overwatch that is available on battle.net.
However before setting up the image of Paladins as a copy of Overwatch, you should consider that there are some aspects that are completely different than Overwatch and also some new features that are not available in the later one.
Also since last couple of months, paladins has been introducing new features in the game that is genuinely setting it apart from all the other hero shooters. This is making the gameplay unique for each match.
So the gameplay in Paladins revolves around the heroes that are available in the game to purchase with in-game currency as well as by in-app purchases. Every character has a set of abilities. To be precise there are 3 unique abilities of each character. The first ability is a kind of primary ability of the hero. The second one is mainly of speed or movement ability that is available for the specific character. And the last ability is the ultimate ability of the character.
It is unique to each character and can be used once for a particular period of time. It needs to be recharged. It can be recharged by either damaging the enemies or by the use of the cards that are available to make the decks before the match.
The cards are a unique set of buffs that enhances a particular attribute of the hero. Apart from these abilities, each hero is equipped with a weapon with a primary shoot and a secondary shoot.
The game features 3 game modes.
Objective is to capture the payload and deliver it to the opponent. The payload is shown as a cart full of bombs. The game mode is played with five players on each side. In ranked, the champions are banned by each side, but in casual they are freely available. After picking the champions the players are free to select the loadout. Then the match enters in warmup.
The teams should first capture the objective area which is generally in the middle of the map until the bar reaches 100%. Then the team is required to stay near the payload as it slowly progresses towards the enemy base. Once it is delivered to the enemy base, the round is called of.
However when opponent team captures the payload you have to defend in. If there are enemies in the area of the payload, the payload stops moving. And when there are only the defenders, the payload travels in reverse. So in this way the defenders must play the time and keep the attackers off the bay.
1 point is awarded when a team captures the payload. 1 point is awarded when the team successfully delivers the payload to the enemy base. And 1 point is given to the defending team it they successfully defend the payload from delivering. The first team to have 4 points win.
The game mode is fairly same as siege however in this game mode there is no payload.
Hold the objective area and collect point. The one to collect 400 points wins. The objective area keeps changing after some amount of time. This makes it even interesting as one team holds the objective and then it suddenly gets re spawned to other area on the map. More the number of champions in the objective ring, more faster will be the collection of points. This game mode is not available in ranked matches
Five versus five deathmatch with instant spawns and the team to get 40 kills wins. The champions are freely available and there are special maps for the team deathmatch
Loadouts are the set of cards that a player picks before the start of the match that contains five of the sixteen available cards for a specific character. These generally enhances the movement or any other ability of the champion.
This allows you to create diverse character builds to adapt to the various situations make you ready for any fight you gonna pick.
In the card build you can select five of the sixteen cards and assign them upto 15 skill points. Skill points are like levels of the particular card. The loadout must have 15 skill points. No more or no less. Strictly fifteen. By the cards you can decide whether to accelerate your healing or your ultimate charge rate.
This experimental loadout is the prime feature of paladins which sets the game apart from overwatch. You will find yourself constantly tweaking and fine tuning your loadout for your character every once in a while.
Customisation of the champion does not end with the loadouts. A champion specific talent is available for each champion before the start of the match. This cannot be changed. This affects either the primary ability or the movement ability. Or sometimes even the ultimate ability.
Just like DoTA, you can purchase some performance enhancing items when in the match from the item shop. The items are purchased by using credits. Credits are earned by killing the opponents, participating in the pushing of the payload, healing other players, or even defending strongly.
For example, if there is enemy Strix who is hiding most of the times to be an extremely effective sniper or marksman, your team can purchase the item illuminate which show the position of hidden enemies when near them.
These are the tankier champions with high number of hit points and can defend themselves in 1v1 situation or also upto 1v2 situations. They generally have one ability to create a sheild or have some sort of protection. Frontlines are mostly used to capture the objective or distract the enemy from the objective while the other players can capture the objective.
Frontlines generally have slow movement speed and also have less dps. But some of them can be still used as flanks. Like Fernando can be still used as flank die to his ability to run faster at times and get the sheild when he needs.
As the name suggests these are the champions having high damage per second. They have the movement speed which is not very fast not too slow. These champions are used to hurt the enemy by constantly reducing their hit points and forcing them to retreat.
Damage champions are crucial as they can instantly force the tank to back off. However in front of the flanks, tanks are a bit weak as they tend to have slower movement speed than the flanks even though having a greater damage.
Flanks are the champions with incredible movement speed. Some flanks can even fly away in and out of the battleground.flying celebrity useful to recapture the objective by surprising the enemy tanks and damages. Flanks generally do not need a healer as their way of from the base and generally found flanking into the enemy territory.
Flanks can quickly escape any any one on one fight as the movement speed is incredible and some of them also have the ability to hide themselves. Happy Birthday playing the flying champion can not be easy for every player out there. The flying champions needed need to be mastered by some practice. These are one of the hardest champions to play in all the paladins.
As the name suggest healers are the ones that heal other champions in the battleground. This does not imply that heals cannot attack.some of the he loves like Grover have incredible base damage of 800. However killers healers tend to stay out of the field and focus on the primary objective of healing the friendly champions.
One of the healer in the game Seris is known father incredible healing capacity and also for her based damage and the ultimate ability. She can hide in plain sight when needed if the enemies too close aur she is in danger of getting fragged. the friendly players can also purchase some cards that allows them to get extra healing or get faster healing from item shop.
Paladins is a free to play game that is available on steam and also on cross platform devices such as Xbox, PS and Nintendo switch. the game contains in app purchases that allows the players to instantly by the champions on the cosmetic items in the game. However the champions can also be bought by using the In game currency.
The In game currency of the game is gold and diamonds. diamonds are generally hard to obtain but you can easily earn gold by completing question playing more and more matches. some players are complaining about the champions being too costly to buy and hence it is requiring more time for the players to earn the gold and by new champions. And about the cosmetic items, that generally a personal choice whether you need it or not.
Since the closed beta release of paladins many players have complained about the bugs in paladins. However the bugs are not really game breaking some of the bugs include invertng of the screen colors during the champion selection phase. Also some bugs cause weird movement issues during the warmup in the games. But this can be ignored as its it does not have a main impact on the gameplay. Evil mojo is trying its best to fix all the bugs and sooner or later it may be fixed.
There are different maps that can be played within a different Game Modes in Paladins. The maps are designed for 2 teams with 5 players. They have 3 different sections and each section of the maps (which basically means it’s 3 different maps). They have capture point in the middle (the one we have to fight for it) and the bases of the teams are located in closed or zoned portions at the both sides of the map.
Near the bases there are the points where you need to push the Payload. Let’s just speak about those you are going to fight against different human players in competitive matchmaking. They are maps that are available if you play Siege. Siege is a round based game mode where each team work together to earn 4 Objective Points in total.
This map is crazy, and exciting things can happen in it. It’s one of the most fun and fastest routes to finish. This map can be easy for flankers, but also for damage dealers. Do not forget the healer, by the way; healer should always be supporting the tank.
If you ask me Frog isle is the shortest version of the map.
This map comes as a different version of Temple Isle which is also a good map for flankers and damage dealers. Drogoz is the right choice on this map; while cannot be flanked that easy and thanks to his abilities, he can hold the mid of the map easy. Try it; you’ll see it’s working.
This map is I guess the most balanced one by far. Long range, short range, everyone can do his job here.
This map can be with fast pace too like other maps in Paladins. The hardest part to hold is the last part where you get harassed by the snipers if there is Kinessa on the other team you might want to eliminate her first 🙂
If you want to have fun without spending a penny, Paladins is the choice. However, you may sometimes encounter some bugs, but it is the price for free to play games. Overall Paladins is a nice and polished game by HI-REZ studios.
