Old games are now worth huge dollars!

A lot of classic games are consistently reissued in a digital version therefore making them widely available to anyone who wants to play them. These days digital versions of classic games are becoming increasingly popular. 

Despite the digitised version, there is still a large collectors market for originals. Very similar to comic books these games have to be in pristine condition. If the game is a limited release then it is considered to be even more valuable and can fetch a lot of money. Here are a few examples – 

The Legend of Zelda prototype –

This limited edition ultra-rare title is likely to earn a little more than a few hundred dollars. Collectors have a special interest in these limited editions. Tom Curtin sold a prototype or test cartridge of the classic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 2012 for $55,000. This large sum is actually lesser than the original price he was asking which a massive $150,000. 

Sonic the Hedgehog –

This iconic character is set to turn 30 in July 0f 2021. The legendary game is worth now more than ever. A near mint copy of the original game for the Sega Genesis was sold for $525 in 2016. 

Hot Wheels –

A toy that we’ve all had while growing up, is now worth a handsome sum of money. Full hot wheels sets can go for thousands of dollars. The most expensive ones have even sold for a whopping $65,000. 

Super Mario Bros.–

Probably the most popular and well known video game of all time, Super Mario Bros, turns 35 next year !. Nintendo has now released a version of this game possible to fit any hardware system. You can download a digital copy of it from the Company’s virtual console collection of legacy games on Wii or Wii U. However the physical version of the game is considered to be very valuable. A factory sealed copy of the 1985 original sold for $450 in 2016.
