Minecraft Library of Journalism

The game is now home to Reporters Without Borders’ uncensored Minecraft Library of Journalism

Minecraft is a well known name in today’s gaming industry. It has become more than just a game; it has become a part of the culture of the 21st century. The 9 year old game is still very popular among gamers, and continues to grow. In an unprecedented achievement, the game is now home to a library.

Origins of the Idea

“We did the uncensored playlist two years ago, to make censored information available through music because Spotify is available in each country in the world.” DDB senior creative Tobi Natterer explained as he was concluding his thoughts that they have done something similar before.

Reporters all around the globes have tried their best to fight censorship. Their means keep changing as they are always out to find the truth. This movement is one of those unique way. Natterer realised this opportunity, when he saw some gamers on his tv, communicating to each other using video games in built character voices. He had his Eureka moment which ultimately resulted in the creation of Minecraft Library of Journalism.

The library will mostly be dedicated to countries with no freedom of expression. Countries like Egypt and Mexico, where Journalists are routinely murdered for reporting the truth. The rooms dedicated to different countries will have memorials for slain journalists. The rooms will mainly contain articles written but not published in/about the countries.

Reporters Without Borders handle the criteria for inclusion. This ensures the library’s content is accurate, truthful, and sensitive, according to Delaney. “We didn’t want this to be tokenistic or surface-level,” he explains. “This needed to be something that was meaningful beyond flashy Minecraft.”
