Minecraft fans will finally be able to play with their friends who have different consoles, as minecraft gets PS4 cross-play support. Minecraft will finally update to the unified Bedrock edition on PS4, which will feature cross-platform support. The consoles supported include Xbox One, Windows 10 PCs, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, Gear VR, and now the PS4. Minecraft fans won’t lose their progress and awards, and the update will be free of cost.
The update will also bring the minecraft marketplace to the console. This all comes 2 years after cross-play was available for XBOX, PC, Mobile and the Switch. This is due to the fact that Sony had previously blocked cross-play for titles like Minecraft and Fortnite. This may have been due to Sony wanting to exploit its supposed market lead. But significant fan outlash led to Sony reinstating cross-platform support. They started changing their policy in September 2018. Since then, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, PUBG and Rocket League have all received Cross-platform support. According to Minecraft studio head Helen Chiang, “One of Minecraft’s core missions is to connect players across devices and provide the best experience regardless of platform;we continue to fulfill that mission here today by welcoming PS4 players to Minecraft on Bedrock and growing our cross-platform multiplayer community.”
Minecraft is an important addition to the list of titles featuring cross-platform play support. The reason is simple; with 480 million players, 112 million of them logging in every month, its safe to say that Minecraft is a fairly popular game. This is perhaps reflected in the fact that it is the most viewed game on Youtube, raking in even more views that Fortnite.
