In this blog today we’ll be remembering Dota 2 The International 2016, the annual Esports tournament of Defence of The Ancients 2 organized and hosted by the game’s developer Valve. The main event took place for the third consecutive time at KeyArena, Seattle.
The last time was the previous year when it hosted The International 2015. The tournament has the enormous prize pool of $20 Million, which was the biggest in the history of esport tournaments till the date, before getting surpassed in the next year’s International. It began with qualifiers on June 21st and went on with the final being held on August, 13 2016.
Out of the 16 total teams 6 of them were invited and the rest 10 were selected through a series of qualifiers.
The open qualifiers have two brackets from 4 regions with 1024 teams participating in the. The top 2 from each one of them were sent to the main regional qualifiers.

For the teams selected by these qualifiers, each of them went on to play in a round robin format with 8 invited teams. The top team was selected for The International. The 2nd to 5th placed team went on to play the playoffs.
5 invited teams played with the 2 selected teams. Similarly the winner heads to the main event and the 2nd to 5th place holders go to the playoffs.
The 4 teams competed in a double elimination bracket. The winning team went on to play The International and the runner up gets a chance to be a part of the Wild Card Series.
The series consisted of 4 teams competing in a double-elimination bracket and the top 2 teams qualified for the Group stage.

The teams were divided into groups of 8 and played in a round robin format. All matches were best of 2.
The top four from each group advanced to the upper bracket and the bottom four to the lower bracket.
The 16 teams played double elimination. And the main event was full of surprises as teams won and lost keeping the fans on their feet. In the end it came down to 2 teams, Wings Gaming the upper bracket winner and Digital Chaos, the lower bracket winner.
Remembering The International 2016 – Grand Finals
The finals were thrilling games with both sides coming out as the best ones through the selections in the last few months to have reached here. The players were pumped up and were on their best gaming abilities to give their all in this high stakes game.
The Digital Chaos took an early advantage by winning the first game of the Best of Five series, but then a twist occurred leaving the 17,000 fans seated at the KeyArena in a surprise as the team Wings Gaming went on to win the next three games continuously! And gained the title of Champion in the Dota 2 The International 2016.
