Destiny 2 is the sequel to the online shooter Destiny (2014), which again comes from the Halo creators Bungie and offers PvP and PvE elements. The science-fiction scenario settles after the first part: The cabal attack the last city and thus the last fortress of the people against the dark. We must go into battle as guardians in the fight against Ghaul and the Red Guard.
The leaders of the individual classes Cayde-6, Ikora Rey and Zavala are returning as well as the classes Hunter, Warlock and Titan. In addition to the last city, there are other unexplored locations in the solar system, as well as new weapons and abilities. Console players can take on their character, but not the light level or inventory; As a newcomer, PC players have no disadvantage. In addition to two smaller extensions, Destiny 2 also received the large extension Forsaken in the first year.
Strikes are co-op dungeons with more challenging fights and bosses, while Gambit offers different PvP modes in which you’ll have to survive hordes of opponents and as an intruder spread chaos on the opposing team’s playing field.
The melting pot brings classic PvP with you, in which you compete against other Guardians in typical modes like Deathmatch.
First of all, only the European Death Zone is accessible, which is why you should visit it. Strikes, gambits and melting pots are also available.
All three are suitable for leveling at the beginning, getting better equipment and getting to know the gameplay. For all activities, you also collect experience points that unlock other planets as targets. Especially at the beginning you have an extremely wide range of opportunities to tackle Destiny, which all feel more or less equivalent and are fun
Destiny 2 is a loot shooter. That means your goal is to get better and better equipment. To do this, you complete missions, multiplayer battles, dungeons and other activities. You can easily complete the main story and the planetary activities on your own.
Others like strikes are contested in co-op. There is matchmaking everywhere except in raids and twilight strikes of high difficulty. Because the six-player and three-player dungeons are too demanding without consultation, you have to find a group here outside of the game beforehand – for example, by joining a clan or visiting a Destiny forum.
The focus is playfully on the feel of the shot, which developer Bungie has masterfully implemented for Destiny 2 for controllers as well as for mouse and keyboard. Each weapon feels different in terms of hit feedback or recoil, whether you’re shooting with a pistol, an automatic rifle, or a rocket launcher
Quite. At the beginning, that’s okay to establish the scene – some Destiny 2 keepers haven’t played the predecessor. For many, it should therefore be a good start to roam around the moon a bit and kill a few nightmare ogres.
The fact that we are forced to do so several times during the campaign is superfluous. Even shortly before the finale, we set ourselves the tasks of the “Kill 100 Fallen on the Moon” brand … Here, the authors and developers should rather have focused more on the story in the first few hours of the game.
NO. Because the shooter mechanics in Destiny 2 generally work very well and especially the gunplay, ie aiming, firing, recoil “feeling” and getting hit feedback, is outstanding. With this finely balanced mechanism, even a slightly modified weapon can make bigger differences. And then in the endgame there are still exotic weapons like the rocket launcher “Todbringer”. Definitely a treat.
You can equip a total of three types of weapon: kinetic weapons without element (regardless of weapon type), special weapons with element (regardless of weapon type) and heavy weapons with element.
Special weapons are designed to match the element to the opponent’s shield color to deal more damage, while heavy weapons are used against bosses. You get kinetic ammunition most often, while special ammunition and heavy ammunition are less common.
No humans serve as opponents, but different alien races such as the fallen, which consist of swift looters and pirates, or the massive cabal, which defends itself with shields and heavy weapons. There are different types of opponents for each race, such as snipers or beefy melee with hatchets, which require their own tactics.
Because you always fight against the same enemies, this is no longer a big challenge at some point. In addition, many bosses simply eat a lot of ammunition without requiring a special strategy. In individual cases, you only have to take care of a few subordinates so that the boss himself is no longer immune.
Destiny 2: New Light has a big problem in terms of content: It offers a lot for free, but it also makes it very inaccessible. New players only gradually unlock the areas of the game world with experience points, but are not explained why they do all this, which activities are worthwhile and what they should do to increase their power level and rarely Dusting equipment.
An example: The campaigns for the main game and the first two DLCs Curse of Osiris and War Spirit are included free of charge, but do not start automatically. You have to talk to NPC Amanda Holliday in the tower, the social hub, to play the main missions. If you don’t know that, you can miss a large part of the story content.
Destiny 2 feels round in the free version and actually feels like a complete gaming experience. If you do not use Forsaken and Shadowkeep, you will still experience all aspects of Destiny, be it the story, strikes, raids, exotic equipment, other co-op modes such as the menagerie, gambit, PvP or the activities on the planet.
If you just want to take a look and get to know the game, the free version is definitely the best choice for you. In terms of scope and fun, Destiny 2: New Light can keep up with many full-price loot shooters – you can easily spend weeks on the free content alone.
The paid content does not contain anything decisive for the game, but ultimately only delivers the same. More raids, more story missions or more rewards and additional activities with the Season Pass – all this with a focus on endgame content that is only aimed at those who really want to spend a lot of time in Destiny 2. A really exemplary fair Free2Play system!
The crux of the matter is whether you like the general gameplay of Destiny 2. If you want to have fun with Destiny 2, you have to put up with the same activities such as strikes at different levels of difficulty to get better equipment. You always kill the same opponents and ultimately always achieve the same goals, regardless of whether you play a strike or an adventure on a planet. It’s always about defending something, collecting something, or killing opponents.
If this is too monotonous for you in the long run, Destiny 2 should disappoint you despite the abundance of content. If you are not sure, it is worth giving the game a chance by, for example, first completing a few free missions or free campaigns. If you like the game principle, but are bothered by other aspects such as the story or the setting, other loot shooters like Warframe (also free) or Borderlands 3 could be an alternative for you.
Shadowkeep aka Fortress of Shadows is the next major expansion in the Destiny 2 universe.
Before it was released, it sounded insane to deprive players of this alleged 10-year project of any progress made. After the campaign ends, however, you also feel connected to your character again as a Destiny veteran. Newcomers will frown on numerous allusions to the predecessor, but will also get a science fiction shooter that they can follow. In the end game there is enough to do for everyone. Strikes, planet zones, quests, mini-dungeons and more are accessible to everyone and motivate thanks to a significantly improved world design and fair loot spiral.
Bungie wants to achieve with New Light that everyone who enjoys Destiny 2 can play together. The variety and possibilities of the content leave no doubt about that. New players are not allowed to just play the campaign for free, which would not be bad in itself. You also get game modes like Gambit, the Black Armory, or the Menagerie, which were previously part of the paid Annual Pass or extensions.
Tough guys face the raid that we have now played and that we really like. In contrast to some raids of the predecessor, teamwork and coordination are much more important in “Leviathan” than pure firepower. In fact, only one of the four raid sections is a classic boss fight. The other three “battles” are more of a team challenge. Here the group has to sneak past voracious beasts, for example, build up a damage buff and then finish the beasts well coordinated and under time pressure.
Another event is more reminiscent of an American gladiator-like TV show in which the characters have to overcome an obstacle course. The Destiny makers play cleverly with possible mechanics and pleasantly loosen up the classic shooter gameplay. On top of that, the raid offers a whole additional level, where players can search for treasure chests, but still have to overcome other obstacles. In short: Destiny 2 gets off to an excellent start.
