A role-playing game (sometimes spelled role playing game; abbreviated RPG) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting, or through a process of structured decision-making regarding character development. Actions taken within many games succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines. So here we present to you the best RPG of all time.
Neverwinter
Even if the name suggests otherwise, Neverwinter is not a continuation of the party role-playing game Neverwinter Nights, but an online role-playing game based on Dungeons & Dragons, the city of the same name and the novel trilogy by R. A. Salvatore. Though it is from 2020, it still holds a solid position int the one of the best rpg.
In it, the player chooses his character from five classic D&D classes and defends himself in the course of the game either alone or in co-op mode against the numerous demons, undead and monsters, all of whom are targeting Neverwinter. D&D: Neverwinter does without a classic subscription model and instead uses a Free2Play concept.
In addition to many customizations, Neverwinter should also offer the opportunity to create a dungeon mission and make it available to its fellow players.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher series is already a legendary and one of the best RPG. But the Witcher 3 takes it to whole new level. The third part of the role-playing series, the player slips into the skin of the warlock Geralt von Riva. Although the title does not offer a “real” open world, it does come up with extensive regions that can be freely explored and offer plenty of variety. In the fantasy scenario, Geralt travels to trade cities, mountain passes or pirate islands, kills exotic monsters or fights supernatural predators.
The task is to find the child from an old prophecy who, according to an old fairy legend, is the key to saving the world. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt includes a dynamic weather system and day and night cycles that also affect the behavior of the NPCs.
Moral decisions also play an important role in the story, and well-known characters such as Triss and Yennefer are once again involved. REDengine 3 serves as the graphic framework. In the meantime, not only the story DLCs “Hearts of Stone” and “Blood and Wine” have been published, but also the GOTY edition for the open-world role-playing game. The Witcher games are based on the book series of the same name by the Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. According to the critics, this is one of the best rpg if not the only one.
Disco Elysium
Disco Elysium (originally “No Truce With The Furies”) is an isometric role-playing game in which we control a mentally ill detective lieutenant. He is supposed to solve a last case in a fictional coastal city.
We can develop a total of 24 skills that affect either the psyche or the physique of our protagonist. Thoughts, memories and ideas are further developed in the so-called “Cabinet of Thoughts”. In conversations with other characters, the further developed talents can give us valuable help.
Divinity: Original Sin 2
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a fantasy role-playing game with turn-based battles. It builds on the technology and game mechanics of the enhanced edition of Divinity: Original Sin (2015), but increasingly focuses on dialogues and action compared to its predecessor.
So, in addition to a freely created hero, we can now play one of several defined characters. We still choose their classes and skills completely freely, but they also bring their own background story with dialog options and quests. The highlight: the characters that we didn’t choose are still in the game world as group members.
Different characters experience the game world differently. Dwarfs are not welcome in noble circles. This is particularly relevant in the co-op, which we can tackle with up to four players – and not only with each other, but sometimes also against each other when we vie for who will solve a quest first or how it should end. The battles rely on the proven, ingenious round tactic system from Original Sin, in which we combine elemental magic in the most devilish way.
For example, we fire lightning bolts in pools of water to put them under power. New are numerous new skills that we can now combine to new skills using »skillcrafting«. With the Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition, the developers have revised the game again in many places and, above all, significantly expanded the third act.
Pillars of Eternity
Pillars of Eternity is one of the best rpg available (first announced in 2012 under the working title »Project Eternity«) is an RPG by Obsidian Entertainment that goes back to the roots of computer RPGs. It offers a high level of complexity, a tactical real-time combat system with a pause function and is shown from an iso perspective. Pillars of Eternity combines the strengths of classics such as Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale or Planescape: Torment.

Torment: Tides of Numenera
Torment: Tides of Numenera is a “spiritual successor” to the role-playing classic Planescape Torment (1999), so it does not have its license. That is why the title is not located in the Planescape world but in the science fiction / fantasy universe Numenera – a billion years in the future. In the course of the action, players are allowed to make moral decisions and deal with profound and personal issues such as transience or life itself.
Just like his template, Torment: Tides of Numenera relies on the iso view. The Unity Engine 4 serves as the graphics framework. For the development, InXile Entertainment received over four million US dollars on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.
Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout: New Vegas is not a direct sequel or add-on to Fallout 3, but an independent game with a new hero. New Vegas takes place three years after Fallout 3, but the locations are completely different: While Fallout 3 was located in Washington on the east coast of the devastated USA, New Vegas is more than 3,000 kilometers west of Nevada.
In »Old World Blues« the player becomes part of an out of control experiment against his will – and thereby reveals the origin of some monsters of the Mojave Desert. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The role-playing game The Elder Scrolls 5: Syrim settles 200 years ago the predecessor The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. The hero of Skyrim, a Dovakhiin – a dragon hunter of the dragonborn family – has to fight Alduin, the world eater and his dragons in the northern region, while the kingdom of Skyrim is on the brink of civil war.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II

Shadowrun: Hong Kong is the third shadowrun game by Harebrained Schemes after Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun Dragonfall. The turn-based role-playing game runs independently and delivers new characters, a revised matrix, an improved editor and of course a new story. The magic system has also been expanded.
As in the predecessors, we can choose from a number of ways to solve a problem. Shadowrun: Hong Kong scores above all with its narrative, the characters were worked out great by the developers, our decisions have noticeable consequences. The playing time is about 20 hours.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
The best rpg in action category, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided takes place in 2029 – 24 months after the events of its predecessor Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Again, it’s about Adam Jensen, who now works for an Interpol-funded task force unit chasing terrorists.
However, he is tracking global conspiracy. In addition, the public has turned against augmentation and makes it a violation of the law. Dark Souls 3
After Demon’s Souls and the first two Dark Souls games, Dark Souls 3 is the fourth part of the action role-playing game series with the hardcore level of difficulty. However, it is also the last part of the Dark Souls series. In the fights, Dark Souls 3 is a little more based on the Bloodborne acrobatics, but shields still play a major role. Diablo III
In Diablo 3, monster hordes attack the Sanctuario game world, and in Diablo 3 you slay the brood back to hell. With one of five classes: the barbarian, the witch doctor, the demon hunter, the monk or the magician. All are available in a male and a female version.
So you throw yourself into the long-term battle in the classic action role-playing style, improve your talents and loot equipment. However, Blizzard has come up with some innovations.
Among other things, you can tune your skills with runes, for example to change the damage type of a spell from fire to poison. Also new are the artisans, two special traders who make powerful items from captured recipes and raw materials. Blizzard’s main focus is still on the well-known co-op mode. The console version of Diablo 3 appears for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 and offers 4-player co-op.
