League of Legends

Exploring the Origins of League of Legends

League of Legends, a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena is a role playing strategy game developed by Riot Games for Microsoft windows and macOS. This game has seemingly become synonymous with online battling games itself, such is it’s popularity. If you know a gamer or you are one then there is a very high chance that you play this game or at least you know about it. As of January 2020 the game has 100 million active players per month. To put that number in perspective, if the numbers of players actively playing this game were to be put into a separate nation, it would be the 15th populous nation on the planet and we have 195 nations worldwide!

So today we’ll be giving a thought, a question as to where did this internet sensation start and grew to become this humongous game it is today!

Development of origins of league of legends

The developer company Riot Games was started by Marc Merrill and Brandon Beck who used to be roommates in the University of Southern California in 2006. Although LoL wasn’t their first game they released but it was one of the premier ones.

Three years after the company was founded League of Legends was released  with 40 champions on 27th October 2009. For the development of the game, they partnered up with Steve Feak the designer of the game Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. They decided the game would be free-to-play and will contain no ads. This I believe is a huge reason for the success of this game.

Reviews and Reception

The Game was quite well received from the very beginning. IGN initially gave it a n 8 out of 10. But after a review some years later and due to all the changes and the tweaks, IGN increased the score to 9.2.

The evidence of how well the game has been received can be shown through the figures. Even after 11 years of release, the number of players is still on the rise. This is also due to the constant updates that have kept the players interested in the game.

Overall

The game is a huge success because of 2 reasons.
Firstly, the time at which this game was made, there was an audience for games which included role playing and different heroes (called champions) which one could use based on their strategy.
And second was how the developers excelled in providing a game like this which could fulfill whatever the players wanted. And that is also the reason why this game still attracts new users. It is because the developers have changed the game according to the time and what the players have been asking. Giving it all and making this their secret recipe for success.
