League of Legends World Championship 2017 was the 7th edition of the annual esports event for the game League of Legends organised by the developer of the game Riot Games. The event was held from September 23 – November 4, 2017 in various cities across China including Wuhan, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing. The event consisted of 24 teams which qualified for the championship on the basis of their placement in the regions of North America, Europe, South Korea, and China.
The event featured the release of the song “Legends Never Die” by J.Fla made especially for the tournament. A remix was also released by Alan Walker. The total Prize Pool was a huge sum of over $4.5 Million, which included the initial Prize Pool and then the 25% of all Championship Ashe & Championship Ward skins. The 7th edition has been much of a stand out from the other editions of the World Championship and this is due to many reasons. The tournament was appreciated for its ceremonial performances.
Out if the 24 teams, 12 were directly a part of the Main event while the other 12 still had to fight to make it there and they were a part of the ‘Play In’
12 teams were divided in Group of 3. All the matches were Best of 1 and a Double Round Robin method was followed. The top 2 teams from Each group went to the next round of Play In.
8 teams from Play In 1 were paired in a Best of 5 Match game and whoever won went onto the group stage of the Main event.
The group stage consisted of 12+4 teams. The 16 teams were divided into groups of 4 and they played a Double Round Robin match series. All the matches were Best of 1 and the top 2 teams from each group advanced to the Knockout stage.
The 8 teams qualified played in a single elimination bracket for the next seven days ending with the Grand Finale.
The Grand Finale of League of Legends World Championship 2017 was a spectacular one. It was held at the Beijing National Stadium, Beijing with a capacity of over 90,000 people. The event gained a solid 60 million people watching around the world. The 2 teams who reached the Finale were SK Telecom T1 and Samsung Galaxy. Samsung Galaxy defeated the enemy with a comfortable 3-0 win for Samsung Galaxy.
