Developed by Ironhide Game Studio and published by Armor Games, Kingdom Rush is a tower defence game released on July 28, 2011. The game was first released as a free flash browser game and was later released on the iPad, Android, PC, Unity port via Steam and in 2020 was released for Nintendo switch. Since then there have been three sequels of the franchise – Kingdom Rush: Frontiers, Kingdom Rush: Origins and Kingdom Rush Vengeance.
Set in medieval times, Kingdom Rush is a real-rime tower defence game. There are empty slots called ‘Strategy Points’ all around the map where players can build towers. There are four types of towers: Mages, Archers, Barracks and Artillery. To build/upgrade a tower a certain amount of money is required. Enemies will soon start appearing from one end of the path. The tower should be strong enough to defeat the enemy before it reaches the other end of the path. Money can be earned by killing enemies, selling built towers, calling enemy waves early or when an enemy reaches the defence point. There are 48 different types of enemies that will be encountered over a span of 18 levels.
The player has a total of 20 lives. If a campaign level is completed with 18 or more lives remaining the player earns 3 stars and the Heroic mode and Iron Challenges are unlocked for that level. These modes are more challenging but take place on the same path. The challenging part being that the player will have one life. Completing a level earns the player a certain number of stars. The stars can be used to unlock upgrades. Heroic Mode and Iron Challenge reward one star each when completed. An update released in 2012 saw the introduction of a shop and a hero’s room. The shop provides items like extra coins, dynamites and so on. The hero’s room has a selection of heroes.
Kingdom Rush has been very well received. It even won the first prize at the 2011 Uruguayan Video Game Contest.
Lucky Duck Games, a board game company that transforms computer games into tabletop games announced that Kingdom Rush would soon become a board game called Kingdom Rush: Rift in Time. This game is set to be released in April of 2020.
