The popular first person shooter Counter Strike Global Offensive continues breaking records amid Coronavirus

Valve’s popular first person shooter series, counter strike, has added another notch on its belt. The game’s latest iteration, counter strike: global offensive has hit 1 million concurrent players. It has achieved this for the first time in its 8 years of existence.

Historic Achievement for Counter Strike Global Offensive

Valve’s eight-year-old first-person shooter hit an incredible peak of 1,002,031 players on 14th march.  This makes it the most famous game on steam as per steam stats. Valve’s MOBA, Dota 2, is currently the second-most popular game on Steam, with a peak of 685,879 players. Battle royale PUBG is in third with 525,462 players. DOTA 2 being in a constant state of decline also helps matters for Counter Strike. It’s only the third game to break the 1 million barrier, with the other games being DOTA 2 and PUBG.

Nothing new, however

The achievement may seem exceptional for an 8 year old game, but the news won’t surprise fans who have kept up with the game.Not just during Coronavirus, Counter Strike Global Offensive has continued growing in popularity ever since it adopted a free-to-play model in 2018. That, coupled with its growing popularity in China along with the release of a battle pass in 2019, has certainly helped matters. The impact of Coronavirus, which has forced people to quarantine themselves and stay indoors could also have been a factor. 

Steam overall is seeing a huge number of users. At the time of this article’s publication, steam broke the record of more than 20 million concurrent players online. 6.2 million players were in-game, while the others were just online.
